MEANING OF VOLUME OF LIQUID
Volume of liquid refers to the capacity of liquids in the containers. Capacity can be measured by using non standard units (more or less) and in standard units in millimeters (ml) and litters (l) in the metric system. Investigations amount of liquids which can be poured between containers of different shapes and sizes. Exploration of capacity or volume of liquid involves manipulation of containers of various sizes that may either be collected or purchased for classroom activities. A cheap way to do the activities is to have your students collect some containers such as mineral water bottles, soft drink cans, vases etc which can be found around them.Teacher can display those collections of containers in a learning centre for students to explore capacity measurement. Every learning centre should have at least a standard graduated measuring cylinder in liters and millimeters. This is to enable the students to measure volume of liquids especially in standard units.

Liquid volume is measured with a device known as the graduated cylinder. The numbered markings on the cylinder represent units known as milliliters. Each milliliter is one thousandth of a liter. Remember the prefix "milli" means a thousandth.
The best way to read the value of the graduated cylinder is to look at it at eye level. Because of physical laws, the liquid in the cylinder forms a crescent shape. This crescent shape is called the meniscus. It curves upward at the sides. You read the volume from the bottom of the meniscus, not the top or middle.
In the diagram above, the meniscus has been placed sothat the bottom of the meniscus is sitting right on top of the 35 mark. Therefore, the volume of liquid in the graduated cylinder is 35 milliliters. In upcoming chapters, we will be dealing with other units of measure and their measuring devices in more detail. Until then, be sure you know how to read a metric ruler and the graduated cylinder for your exam. Know the purpose of the different tools mentioned in this unit. Know their parts, functions and how they are used or read.
